The First Glutton

There was no gluttony in heaven among the angels. There was no gluttony among the created beings in millions of inhabited worlds. Gluttony is selfishly and harmfully eating more than you need for a balanced meal.

The selfish indulgence of appetite began with Eve in the Garden of Eden. Gluttony has been in the genes and practices of many ever since. The current epidemic of obesity is a sign that self control is disappearing from the world we live in.

Is there a solution for gluttony? The Bible tells us we need to guard our mouths. We need to watch what we eat. Solomon made this clear in Proverbs 13:3 (NKJV) “He who guards his mouth preserves his life, but he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction.”

Knowing that guarding our mouth is what we should do, and then actually limiting what we eat is an impossibility for many. David recognized that appetite control would require special strength from God. “Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips.Psalms 141:3 (NKJV)

Ask God to give you strength to control what you eat. “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you” (John 15:17). His promises are dependable!
