Workplace Exposures May Contribute to Infertility

Careful examination and testing often fails to identify the cause of infertility in men with abnormal semen analysis. An interesting but small, retrospective, study conducted in France has reported certain occupational exposures may be associated with sperm abnormalities. These exposures include:

  • heavy metals
  • solvents
  • industrial fumes
  • pesticides
  • mechanical vibration
  • excessive heat
  • extended sitting

Prospective studies are needed for a clearer understanding to the possible interactions between workplace exposures and other factors.

PositiveTip: All men can break up periods of extended sitting by short walks and simple exercises done at the desk or on long flights.
