The northern hemisphere is still locked in winter, but many people are dreaming of sunny, warm days spent on the beach! It has been well know that tropical beaches harbor antibiotic resistant bacteria–but what about US beaches? University of Washington researchers collected water and sand specimens from 10 Washington state beaches. A surprisingly high number of samples contained multi-drug resistant pathogens which closely resembled the kinds found in hospitals–even though none of the beaches was near a hospital.
