Use of Prescription Sleep Aids in U.S. Adults

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) data collected between 2005 and 2010 revealed that 4.1% of American adults over 20 used a prescription sleep medication in the past month. The highest rates were among women, the elderly, whites, and those with a college education. Surprisingly, 3.1% reported using sleep aids without a physician diagnosis of a sleep problem. Sleep medications do have risks.
