Pets Improve Autistic Kids Social Skills

French researchers have found autistic children who got a pet after age 5 showed significant gains in “offering to share” and “offering comfort.” This small study suggests that aquiring pets may encourage the development of prosocial behaviors. The pets included dogs, cats, one hamster, and one rabbit. No differences were found in children with autisim who had pets from birth compared to their pet-less peers.

PositiveTip: Aquiring a pet may enhance children’s social skill development.
