New Risk Factor for Heart Disease Found in Red Meat

Many studies have associated consumption of red meat with elevated risks of  cardiovascular disease. Now ground-breaking research at the Cleveland Clinic has found that the bacteria in the gut breakdown a constituent of red meat, carnitine to TMAO, which significantly raises the risk of heart disease. Vegetarians have much lower levels of TMAO than those who eat meat. Carnitine is a frequent additive of sodas, and is sometimes taken as a supplement.
