Maternal Obesity and Premature Deliveries

Overweight or obese new moms during the early months of pregnancy are at significantly higher risk of experiencing a premature delivery. Analysis of the Swedish national registries of more than 1.6 million deliveries revealed that women with BMIs of 35 or higher had 2-3 times the risk of extremely premature deliveries. The impact of obesity on inflammatory markers may contribute to this risk.

PositiveTip: Maintain healthy weight to support both mother and infant health outcomes in the short- and long-term.
