A Self-Administered Memory Test for Dementia Screening

The number of people with dementia is expected to double in the next 20 years! Alzheimer’s disease is the commonest form of dementia. Assessment of cognitive status is important for the physician in providing medical and social management to the patient and their family.

Many cognitive tests are available, but all require professional administration. A group of British researchers have developed the “Test Your Memory” (TYM) test and takes only about five minutes to complete by the patient. The British Medical Journal reports this month that the TYM can detect over 90% of Alzheimer cases in those who already demonstrate mild cognitive impairment with 90% accuracy. The TYM has yet to be validated in a range of settings and different populations.

Positive Tip: Consistently choose a healthy lifestyle, emphasizing a plant-based diet with lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains along with plenty of physical activity. This may not prevent dementia, but iodds are you will delay its onset.
