Australian scientists have analyzed samples of traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) using state-of-the-art testing methods to unscramble the complex mix of ingredients found in powders, tablets, teas, and capsules. Some of the plant families identified are potentially toxic to humans. Ingredients coming from endangered or vulnerable animal species were also identified. Many other compounds were found to be adulterated. Labeling of these products was often incomplete. These findings raise serious questions about the safety and efficacy of TCM preparations.
PositiveTip: Be vary cautious of taking TCM preparations–they may contain more than meets the eye.
