More Complications in Diabetic Hip Fractures
Posted by Galen Bosley on
Hip fractures in diabetics result in 2X the post-op problems and longer hospital stays.
British researchers compared the treatment outcomes of nearly 6000 hip fractures in diabetics and non-diabetics. The diabetics experienced more walking limitations and were more likely to need a walking aid than those without diabetes. Following surgery, the diabetics developed twice the post-operative cardiac complications and pressure ulcers, and required 4 additional days of hopitalization compare to those without diabetes.
PositiveTip: Diabetics need to take the condition seriously. Healthy eating and regular physical exercise go along ways to help control it.

Check your risk of osteoporotic bone fractures without any laboratory measurements!
Estimate your risk of premature bone fractures without any lab tests? Hop on over to QFracture to see what your score is! British researchers developed this site after developing the risk prediction algorithm using data from 2.4 million men and women and validating it against another 1.3 million others. A long list of variables were used to develop the QFractureScore. You will need your height and weight in metric values, and if needed can convert these easily online.
PositiveTip: Smoking, alcohol use, obesity, corticosteroids, and some antidepressants lead to a higher risk of osteoporotic fractures.
