Single-food studies could miss other important factors.

Swedish researchers analyzed the dietary habits of 25,000 adults without diabetes, cardiovascular disease or cancer. They found those consuming the most sugar-sweetened beverages also consumed significantly fewer healthy foods. High consumption of coffee was also associated with higher intakes of high-fat foods and lower intakes of breakfast cereals. These results were adjusted for potential confounding factors such as age, sex, BMI, activity and energy intake.

PositiveTip: Remember, we do not eat single foods. We eat combinations that result in healthy or unhealthy dietary patterns.

The information available on caffeine these days is very confusing. Some sources advocate caffeine drinks as “energy” drinks. Some recommend caffeinated drinks but suggest avoiding the “additives” in caffeinated drinks – sugar, fat, vitamins, and amino acids. Others claim that caffeine is addictive with nasty side-effects. First fact: Caffeine is not an “energy” producer! True energy comes from a source of calories which can be burned by the body. Caffeine does not produce energy.

Coffee as a Source of Potassium?

There are better ways to get potassium than from coffee.

Reports are circulating on some blogs that coffee is one of the highest food sources of potassium. Fact is that that we get a lot of it from coffee because we don't eat enough of the foods that are the best sources of this important nutrient. For really potassium-rich foods include foods like cooked greens, potatoes, bananas, citrus fruit and dried apricots. Legumes (beans) are also high in potassium, along with whole grain breads.
